The Derek Nash Funk Experience @ Centenary Centre

Derek has been a member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra since 2004, has led Sax Appeal for over thirty years, fronts the funk/fusion band Protect the Beat, and is a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Blues Explosion.

He is renowned for his energetic, vibrant, passionate and charismatic performances on all four saxophones – from sonorous baritone to soaring soprano – and is an award-winning performer having received the John Dankworth Award and the British Jazz Award (Small Group) for Sax Appeal. He received Best Jazz CD of the Year for Young Lions, Old Tigers with the late Spike Robinson, receiving the same British Jazz Award for “Joyriding” by The Derek Nash Acoustic Quartet in 2012. He regularly appears in the British Jazz awards nominations in several categories (Alto/Tenor and Baritone) and was nominated for Jazz Musician of the Year by the Global Music Foundation.

With the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Derek performs approaching 100 gigs per year, including for 65,000 people at the Cardiff Millennium Stadium and for over 100,000 at the Glastonbury Festival, where he was a featured soloist, and he also appears on the last seven CDs.  He has performed live and on TV with such greats as Eric Clapton, Amy Winehouse, Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Sir Paul McCartney, Solomon Burke, Annie Lennox, Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Madeleine Peyroux, Roger Daltrey, David Sanborn, Eddi Reader and Tom Jones.

So, we are really excited that Derek has found the time to bring his show – The Derek Nash Funk Experience to Peel! Fronted by Derek, the Funk Experience is a five piece band bringing together some of Europe’s top flight session musicians.

Yes, it’s party time at the Peel Centenary Centre as we welcome back “Retrospect” for an evening crammed with timeless classics from the likes of Jackie Wilson, The Commitments, Aretha Franklin through to more modern powerhouse standards – all guaranteed to make you get onto the dance floor and stay there!

“Retrospect” is a local 11-piece function band which has brought together some of the Island’s finest musical talent. Comprised of a standard rhythm section (i.e. Keyboard, Drums, Bass and Guitar) together with a full ‘Horn Section’ (Trumpet, Alto Sax, Tenor/Baritone Sax and Trombone) and fronted by three very talented singers, Retrospect delivers a complete and rich sound, reproducing with some precision, the sound and feel of the artists that they cover. The band has received critical acclaim for the quality of its performances.

Because (as with previous years) there will be a dance floor, overall capacity will be reduced to 170 tickets, so don’t wait too long to get your tickets!

This film is hilarious!! We were in stitches watching this film. Sam Neill and Julian Dennison are fantastic.

The legendary Harry Manx makes a welcome return to Peel for the last in the series of events booked by our dear friend Jonathan “Jonno” Gollow, before his very sudden and sad passing earlier this year.

Harry Manx is a Canadian musician who blends blues, folk music, and Hindustani classical music. He describes his music as being a “blend Indian folk melodies with slide guitar blues, add a sprinkle of gospel and some compelling grooves and you’ll get Manx’s unique “mysticssippi” flavour.”

This one is for you Jonno.
