Gareth Gates Live @ Centenary Centre
Nov 2 @ 8:00 pm – 10:15 pm

Born in Bradford in July 1984, Gareth Gates always knew he wanted to be a performer. It’s well known as a young boy he was head chorister for Bradford Cathedral Choir and performed solo for the Queen when she visited in 1997. What’s less well known is that he has a natural gift for music and, as well as being a faultless vocalist, he is an accomplished musician, playing piano and guitar to the highest standard.

In 2002, Gareth was famously runner-up to Will Young in the UK’s first Pop Idol. Instead of disappearing into ‘pop oblivion’, he carved out a very successful career for himself, having hits and travelling worldwide. Gareth sold 5 million records worldwide, released three albums and had five UK number-one singles. He won record of the year in 2002 and with that had the second best-selling single of the ‘noughties’ with ‘Unchained Melody’. Outside of the UK, Gareth was awarded Best International Male in 2003/04 from MTV Asia, MTV China and MTV Taiwan.

In 2008, Gareth donned the sequins and Lycra every Sunday night to take part in the hit ITV1 show Dancing on Ice, in front of millions of TV viewers, coming fourth in the competition. Not bad for someone who couldn’t even stand up on the ice at the beginning!

Post-Dancing on Ice, Gareth decided to change musical direction and accepted the lead role in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. It was a role he first played at the tender age of eight in school and proved to be an ideal start to his theatrical career. During this time, Gareth also tackled his first pantomime as Prince Charming in Cinderella at Wimbledon Theatre, to which he thoroughly enjoyed.

In 2009, Gareth auditioned for, and impressed, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, which led to him playing the role of Marius in the 25th anniversary tour of Les Misérables. This mammoth ten-month tour played to sell-out audiences as far afield as Manchester, Norwich, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Paris, Bristol and Southampton, ending at the Barbican in London with 22 special performances at the show’s original home. This brand-new production featured new direction, staging and arrangement – and Gareth wowed audiences up and down the country, and a new cast recording was also made. Following on from this successful stint, Cameron Mackintosh asked Gareth to resume the role in the West End, which finished in June 2011.

In the autumn of 2011, Gareth spent time planning and filming a documentary that showed the struggle faced by people with a stammer, Gareth Gates: Stop My Stutter. This emotional journey followed Gareth as he taught young people with a stammer the McGuire technique, in a bid to change their lives. Gareth, now a qualified teacher, spent four days teaching these students and learning about their individual goals and challenges.

In June 2012, Gareth took on his most challenging role to date, one that contained more speech than he has had to tackle before. He played the have-it-all rich kid Eddie in the brand-new musical Loserville at West Yorkshire Playhouse – doubly enjoyable, as he got to work in his home county and spend time with his family.

Following this, Gareth joined the cast of Legally Blonde on its UK tour, playing the role of Warner. In addition to this, he toured with a new production of Boogie Nights with The Osmonds, and even sang ‘Puppy Love’ to delighted crowds! He also appeared on the second series of the popular ITV2 show The Big Reunion, which saw him join other pop stars in creating a new boy band, Fifth Story, who appeared at a sold-out concert at the Hammersmith Apollo, London.

In addition to releasing The Very Best of Gareth Gates in 2014, Gareth continues to tour, write and produce music. 2016 saw Gareth launch his new venture ‘Cuppanut’ – a coconut hot infusion.  An idea he dreamt up and made a reality, as an alternative to caffeinated drinks, it has since been exclusively stocked by Holland and Barrett and has recently scooped eight top food awards!

This year Gareth has just finished touring the UK with Footloose the Musical, where he played the comedy role for the first time! He loved it.

He’s thrilled to be coming back to Peel!

Dec 14 @ 8:00 pm – 10:15 pm

NEIL ANGILLEY is a brilliant pianist, equally at home playing jazz, Latin or classical.

He has worked with the acid jazz percussionist Snowboy, is MD for the violin virtuoso Vanessa Mae and was keyboardist and arranger for jazz chart-topping band “Down to the Bone”.

He includes work with the likes of Shirley Bassey, Michael Ball, Jazz clarinettist Julian Marc Stringle and Jazz/Rock show “War of The Worlds” on a glittering CV. A great jazz as well as Latin/Brazilian player, his remarkable musicianship is enormously respected throughout the scene.

Neil’s debut album “Havana Club”, featuring some of his renowned Latin/jazz original compositions, was received with great acclaim and his second, highly impressive, album under his own name, “Chango” featuring, amongst others, one of Europe’s finest percussionists, Snowboy, was equally well received.

In this concert, as well as his Latin repertoire, Neil will be presenting music from his latest project “The Lake District” suite. Also featured are his storming rhythm section of Davide Mantovani on bass and Davide Giovannini on drums.

Based on a True Fantasy

Taron Egerton excels in this flamboyantly told story of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. The colours are stunning, the settings are striking and the energy is irresistible. This sequin-encrusted biopic explodes with the kind of colour and energy that only Elton John himself could invoke.

Taron Egerton won the “Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy” at the 2020 Golden Globes. He’s also been nominated for the “Best Leading Actor” 2020 BAFTA Film Award and “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role” for the 2020 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Elton John and Bernie Taupin also won “Best Original Song – Motion Picture” at the Golden Globes for the film’s original song “I’m Gonna Love Me Again”. Rocketman has a load more award nominations for 2020, not just for Egerton’s performance and the original song, but also a lot of nominations going to Elizabeth Yianni-Georgiou for her incredible hair and makeup design for the film and similarly, Julian Day for the costume design.

Her greatest work will be her biggest crime.

51 award wins and 87 nominations. Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant were both nominated for awards in the 2019 Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAs and SAGAs for their roles in this fantastic crime story.

Lee Israel (Melissa McCarthy) made her living in the 1970s and ’80s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen. When Lee is no longer able to get published because she has fallen out of step with current tastes, she turns her art form to deception, abetted by her loyal friend Jack (Richard E. Grant). An adaptation of the memoir “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” relays the true story of the best-selling celebrity biographer (and friend to cats).

Some bands can’t be managed

A gentle feel-good British comedy based on the unlikely but real-life story of a group of Cornish lifeboat workers. Moonlighting as a sea shanty-singing a cappella group, Fisherman’s Friends, they were signed by Universal and recorded a debut album that reached the top ten.

A fast-living, cynical London music executive (Danny Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate ‘fish out of water’ as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to re-evaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.

“Be careful what you unleash”

Winner of the 2019 BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer; 6 further award wins and 20 nominations

Moll is 27 and still living at home, stifled by the small island community around her and too beholden to her family to break away. When she meets Pascal, a free-spirited stranger, a whole new world opens up to her and she begins to feel alive for the first time, falling madly in love. Finally breaking free from her family, Moll moves in with Pascal to start a new life. But when he is arrested as the key suspect in a series of brutal murders, she is left isolated and afraid. Choosing to stand with him against the suspicions of the community, Moll finds herself forced to make choices that will impact her life forever.

In her tiny island community, twenty-something Moll “Jessie Buckley” quickly falls for charming newcomer Pascal “Johnny Flynn”. When he is named the top suspect in several murders around town, she defends him to her family but becomes doubtful as she sees his true colors. Geraldine James, Trystan Gravelle, and Shannon Tarbet also star. Written and directed by Michael Pearce.

Inspired by the real-life case of the ‘Beast of Jersey’, this magnificent modern day fairy-tale is full of monsters, plot-twists, and paranoia.

“Immaculately composed yet skittish, edgy and surprising, this impressive debut by writer-director Michael Pearce emanates a chill that will have you hugging your sides.” – Philip De Semlyen, Time Out

“The dark nail-biter eschews the obvious at every turn and is less a whodunit than a twisted moral meditation grounded by its mesmerizing leading lady.” – Barbara VanDenburgh, Arizona Republic

“A strong debut from director Michael Pearce, with a gripping performance by newcomer Jessie Buckley. So much more than just another serial-killer movie.” – Dan Jolin, Empire
