Kanda Bong o Man
\nSoukous\, the dance music of Zaire\, was updated by Paris-based vocalist and bandleader Konda Bongo Man. With his high tenor v ocals alternating between lyrics in Lingala andFrench\, Bongo Man and his band\, which has included influential guitarists Diblo Dibala in the 198 0s and Rigo Star in the 1990s\, has sparked dancing in audiences around the globe.
\nThe New York Times wrote\, "\;Zairean soukous is a l ilting\, rippling\, dance groove that seems to smile from every register\, with melody and rhythm inseparable.

Kanda Bongo Man will be joine d by a six piece band and two dancers on his visit to the Peel Centenary C entre.

Gasper Nali
\nGasper Nali is a Malawi an one-man-band. An old video of him playing his 3 metre longone-string ba ss guitar has been watched over 18 million times online in the last 12 mon ths. Gasper’s incredible instrument – a Babatoni – is all homemade\, and i s played with a beer bottle and a stick while he’s singing and stomping a locally fashioned kick-pedal on his cow
\nskin bass drum. His music i s bouncy and catchy\, Malawi Roots to the core\, and very danceable. Songl ines Magazine summed it up very well in their 4-star review of his album: “…simple but joyous\, and totally infectious”.

Gasper\, 35\, lives a quite modest life in the small town of Nkhata Bay on the shores ofnorth ern Lake Malawi. In his younger years\, he and his brothers would travel a bit with a family band in order to make money\, but these days he lives a lone in a small house inNkhata Bay\, mainly supporting himself by playing regular shows at venues in town\,

Michael Mountain\, the composer and singer\, is a multifaceted m an. He is a small-scaletobacco and maize farmer\, a community organiser\, a reflective thinker\, a prolificsongwriter and a charismatic artist. On o ne hand he is deeply rooted in the spirituality ofthe Rastafari movement\, on the other\, immersed in the local politics of being chief of asmall vi llage.

Raised and educated in Zambia\, Michael now lives the humbl e lifestyle common to mostpeople in rural Malawi with his wife and two you ng children. The front porch of their small house is his favourite place. From there he can clearly see life from a different point of view and put these reflections into song.
\nHis debut album “Nowhere Else To Go” w as mainly recorded in a studio on the shores of Lake Malawi\, where Michae l’s soulful voice was backed up by a crew of fantastic musicians from the Nkhata-Bay area. A few overdubs\, some finishing touches and themixing was done in Sweden and the result of this collaboration is something quite sp ecial.
\nIts an old school\, low-key kind of reggae\, where Michael’s singing takes centre stage infront of a band that produces an organic and sometimes almost fragile vibe.

The au thors will discuss the background of the project and the process of creati ng it\, as well as sharing some of their favourite and telling sites. Thes e folklore sites are located all over the Isle of Man and include holy wel ls\, fairy caves\, giant’s rocks\, ghost bridges\, and the creepiest place the authors have ever visited.

This illustrated talk will give a picture of five years’ worth of research into over 400 folklore sites arou nd the Island\, and give the audience a chance to meet and ask questions o f the authors.

The evening will offer a unique and surprising insi ght into the treasures within ‘A Guide to the Folklore Sites of the Isle o f Man.’

World-renowned US blues act the Erin Harpe Country Blues Duo will be appearing at the Peel Centenary Centre (Atholl Room) fo r the very first time on April 14.

The Duo have been called “today ’s country blues at its very best” by America’s oldest blues periodical Li ving Blues Magazine\, who crowned Erin “one of the finest fingerpicking ac oustic blues singers in the land”.

A passionate purveyor of the vi ntage country blues and roots music she was brought up on\, Erin is consid ered one of the premier acoustic blues pickers in the world today\, showin g off her feel-good\, ragtime-influenced Piedmont roots in her award-winni ng Country Blues Duo\, aka “CBD”.

The group features Erin on acous tic guitars\, vocals\, kazoo & foot percussion\, with her husband\, Jim Co untryman\, on ukulele bass and backing vocals.

The pair’s foot-sto mping back-porch blues transports the audience to the Delta\, with catchy and danceable vintage classics by the likes of Memphis Minnie\, Mississipp i John Hurt\, Tommy Johnson and Blind Blake – elevated by Erin’s own inter pretations – mixed in seamlessly with original compositions and country bl ues takes on popular songs.

The act has been a hit everywhere from intimate venues to blues festivals\, from the US to the UK and EU\, to ru m bars in Jamaica!

Songwriters Hannah Rebekah (from Seattle\, USA) and John Lightfiel d will be performing their own accomplished songs\, while acoustic blues a nd ragtime guitarist John Gregory will demonstrate his fingerpicking skill s. Mike Wade and Ian Allen\, formerly of legendary Manx band The Ballaghs\ , will be appearing on the Acoustic Delight stage for the first time after recently performing gigs together in the UK.
